Faughan Valley Sculpture Trail

The Role

The Faughan Valley runs from the foothills of the Sperrin Mountains along the River Faughan to the outskirts of the City of Derry-Londonderry. Covering approximately 80 square miles, it has been identified as an area of strategic importance due to the quantity and quality of the natural and built heritage features present.

In 2018 Woodland Trust commissioned Outscape to produce a Access and Interpretation Strategy for the Faughan Valley.

The combination of a special ancient wooded landscape, the desire to develop a rural greenspace accessible to a wide range of users and the change being enacted through the development of dualling of the A6, resulted in the identification of opportunities for improvement for the Faughan Valley landscape and the people who live and visit there.

Woodland Trust has commissioned Outscape to scope, design and develop a Sculpture Trail that links currently disconnected woodland sites along the Faughan Valley. This forms part of a wider long-term management plan to restore, protect and connect the woodlands of the Faughan Valley for future generations to enjoy.

Outscape working in partnership with Woodland Trust is currently procuring funding for capital development of:

• Iconic Sculpture Trail – comprising multiple, small, medium and large sculptures
• Creation of multi-use trails network of 8.5km to facilitate access to the sculptures and connect currently disconnected sites
• Installation of pedestrian bridge to cross River Faughan between Brackfield Wood and Red Brae Wood
• Visitor Car Park in Red Brae Woods
• Associated interpretation and waymarking throughout the trail network
• Link to proposed Greenway
