Client: Sport Northern Ireland in partnership with Waterways Ireland
The Challenge
To undertake a feasibility study to assess the potential of developing a walk and cycle route along the Lower Bann between Toome and Coleraine.
The aim of the study was to:
‘Provide details of costs and viability of developing a Blueway type route between Toome ad Coleraine along the Lower Bann corridor as a regional / national facility for individuals / walking clubs / walking for health groups / tourists etc.’
The Role
We were commissioned by Waterways Ireland and SportNI to:
- add value to the Lower Bann Corridor, connecting the space along the river in a strategic way
- enhance the tourism offering of the Lower Bann corridor
- improve access to the countryside in a carefully managed and sustainable way
- allow for the creation of doorstep outdoor recreation opportunities for local communities through the development of Community Trails
- create a new walk and cycle product that showcases the unique landscape, environment, heritage and wildlife of the destination
- complement the existing Canoe Trail and to allow for the development and promotion of a ‘Blueway‘, similar to other Waterways Ireland managed navigations in the Republic of Ireland
- encourage more visits, bed nights and spend within the area
