Outdoor Recreation Quality Framework

Client: Roscommon County Council

The Challenge

To deliver a structured and comprehensive approach for assessing and improving the overall standard, management, and visitor experience of outdoor recreation sites in Roscommon.

This was a key action identified within the recently published Rosocommon Outdoor Recreation Strategy which identified that there is a disparity in the quality and provision between outdoor recreation sites in County Roscommon.

The Role

Through a process of desk research, benchmarking, fieldwork and stakeholder engagement, Outscape was required to prepare a criteria based framework to ensure a consistent and quality standard for outdoor recreation sites within the county.

In developing the framework, it was required to consider the following:

  • visitor welcome/signage and promotion
  • proposition on offer
  • trail surface
  • visitor services
  • management and on-going maintenance
  • appropriateness of existing infrastructure to its environment in respect of sustainability and biodiversity
  • categorisation of existing trails/outdoor recreation facilities in respect of the CARA document: The Great Outdoors – A guide for accessibility
