Strategic Outdoor Recreation Research

The Challenge

While the benefits of outdoor recreation are widely evidenced in general, a lack of specific information on outdoor recreation in Northern Ireland means it is hard to provide an accurate picture of the benefits of outdoor recreation to the people of Northern Ireland.  This data is, however, being gathered in other parts of the United Kingdom (UK) and is being used to inform policy development and monitor the contribution of outdoor recreation to government agendas, particularly improving physical health and mental wellbeing.

The key challenge is to understand and analyse current data available and to plug the information gaps with a view to better informing public policy and establishing a baseline measurement that could be monitored for Programme for Government.

This project is currently underway.
